Filby, 1910

Singer: George ‘Chummy’ Gorble

Ralph Vaughan Williams writes ‘George Goble (“Chummy”) Filby, Norfolk’ (rvw2/1/240) while George Butterworth has ‘Mr George Goble (c70), Filby, Norfolk’ (gb7c/19 and gb7c/29), and these clues lead to two candidates, both called Gorble, born in 1847 and 1857, about 7 years and 17 years late for Butterworth’s estimate, neither of which has a known nickname.  This shows the difficulties encountered because song-collectors did not get enough accurate details of their singers.
