Musical Roots

Musical Roots Community Project

Musical Roots ran throughout 2004 and 2005, and aimed to extend competent musicians and singers’ knowledge of the local traditional repertoire and improve performance skills.

It took place in the small town of Eye, in north Suffolk, not far from the Norfolk border. Many of the villages in the area could boast fine traditional singers and musicians in the past.

We welcomed both people presently involved in folk music activities in the area, and musicians from other genres wanting to learn more to get involved in the project.

There were fortnightly meetings in the Sixth Form Centre at Hartismere High School which included taught sessions for singers with Jeannie Harris, and musicians (any instrument) with Katie Howson. There were also several chances to sing and play informally and for local community performances during the project.

We looked at songs and tunes from the local and regional traditional repertoires including some little-known gems. Participants were encouraged to learn by ear, and learning resources were provided. Many of the participants have gone on to play with other community groups and contribute to keeping the songs and tunes alive.
