Rollesby, 1908

Singer: George Lock

On Friday 17th April 1908 George Lock1 sang 6 songs to Vaughan Williams; the last of these being Man of Birmingham Town. George Lock was born in 1845 in the adjoining parish of Ormesby, but from his wedding in 1869 to Mary Ann Mason he resided in Rollesby 2, where his 3 children were born.  Mary Ann died in 1882 and he married Eliza Gedge in 1887 apparently without children.  There is no trace of him, age 16, on the 1861 census, possibly because he was at sea on Census day, April 7th; he is described as a fisherman in 1871.  Thereafter he is noted as an agricultural labourer up to 1911, the last census available (in 2017) before his death in 1922.
