Stepdance Day 2024

The Compasses, Littley Green, Chelmsford CM3 1BU

A report on the day can be found HERE!

There are lots of picnic benches in the pub garden but pop a picnic chair in the boot just in case!

Steve and his team at The Compasses, Littley Green, Essex are delighted to be hosting this year’s Stepdance Day and we are extremely grateful of the warm welcome we’ve received in putting on this event.

The pub is a member of the 6th generation of the Ridley Brewing Family and has a superb selection of Real Ale and Traditional Ciders to choose from. It also serves food and for those coming a distance, has some accommodation.

The Compasses is a popular choice of venues for local musicians and dancers and Essex based Myles Barrett runs a monthly Music & Songs Session every 3rd Monday of the month starting at 8.30pm.

Particularly special about the selection of this pub for Stepdance Day is that our friend Steve Monk ran a regular session here. Added to that, Essex is the birth place of Stepdance Day – a day created by the Jayne Delarre as part of local Millennium celebrations. A year later, the Day incorporated a memorial competition in memory of Steve who died suddenly, far too young.

EATMT took over the running of the day a few years later (2004) and moved the event to Suffolk. You can read more about the history of the event HERE.

The event starts around midday. Norfolk Stepdancer Fiona Davies will be running a workshop for anyone wanting to have a go at Stepdancing and added last year, a workshop on Jig Doll dancing which will be led by George Monger. Following the workshops, we will be running Stepdancing Competitions as well as a Jig Doll dancing competition. We hope an impromptu music session will strike up too.

The event is FREE and of course, Steve and the Compasses team hope you partake in some of their fine selection of beverages as well as the food on offer. You can place food orders on the day and food will be served until 8.30pm. Please do not consume your own food or drinks in the pub grounds.

Our wonderful Patron Gloria Buckley will be running a Raffle for EATMT to raise some money to help continuing our work. Please do consider bringing a raffle prize!

Overspill parking is available in a field to the rear of the pub.

We hope to see lots of old and new faces – definitely, the more the merrier.
